PIP Appeal Won: What Happens Next and How Backpay Works
What happens immediately after you win
You’ll get the decision by post after the hearing. You may get a decision on the day if you go to the hearing.
The decision notice states which descriptors and points the tribunal awarded for each PIP activity, the component rates you are entitled to (standard or enhanced daily living, standard or enhanced mobility), and the period the award covers.
How the DWP implements the decision
The tribunal sends its decision to the DWP, which must update its systems to reflect the new award. This is not optional — the DWP is legally bound by the tribunal's decision. In practice, implementation can take several weeks. If your DWP online account still shows the old decision after a month, contact the PIP helpline with your tribunal appeal reference number.
Once the DWP processes the decision, your regular PIP payments change to reflect the new award from your next payment date onwards.
How backpay is calculated
Backpay (arrears) covers the period between the effective date of the decision you appealed and the date the DWP implements the tribunal's ruling. You receive the difference between what you were paid (if anything) during that period and what you should have been paid under the tribunal's decision.
For example, if the DWP refused your PIP entirely in January 2026 and the tribunal awards you enhanced daily living and standard mobility in November 2026, your arrears cover roughly ten months of the combined weekly rate — less any PIP you received during that time.
The 2026/27 weekly rates (from 6 April 2026) are:
- Standard daily living: £76.70 per week
- Enhanced daily living: £114.60 per week
- Standard mobility: £30.30 per week
- Enhanced mobility: £80.00 per week
Backpay is usually paid as a lump sum. The exact amount depends on the award dates, the rates in force during each part of the period, and any PIP already paid. The DWP calculates this — you do not need to work it out yourself, though checking the arithmetic against your decision notice and payment records is sensible.

Linked benefits that may change
Winning your PIP appeal can trigger changes to other benefits and concessions:
- Carer's Allowance: If someone cares for you and you now qualify for the daily living component (standard or enhanced), they may be able to claim or restore Carer's Allowance.
- Universal Credit carer element: The person caring for you may gain the carer element in their UC if your daily living award is now in place.
- Motability: Enhanced rate mobility may qualify you for the Motability Scheme if you have at least 12 months left on the award and meet the Scheme’s other requirements.
- Blue Badge: Specific PIP mobility scores qualify you for a Blue Badge — 8 or more points for Moving Around, or 10 points for descriptor E in Planning and Following Journeys.
- Council Tax discount or exemption: Some local authorities offer reductions for people receiving certain disability benefits.
Contact each relevant agency or scheme once the DWP has processed your tribunal decision. They will not automatically update — you need to notify them and provide evidence of your new award.
What if the DWP delays implementation
If the DWP is slow to process the tribunal's decision, you can contact the PIP helpline and ask them to prioritise it. Reference your HMCTS appeal number and the date of the decision notice. If the delay is prolonged, a formal complaint to DWP Customer Services — escalating to the Independent Case Examiner if necessary — is the next step.
You should not need to reapply for PIP after winning a tribunal appeal. The DWP implements the tribunal's decision directly.
The PIP Tribunal Appeals guide covers the post-hearing process in detail, including what to check on your decision notice and how to follow up with the DWP and linked benefit agencies.
