PIP Backpay and Arrears After Mandatory Reconsideration
How PIP Backpay Works After a Successful MR
If DWP changes its decision following a mandatory reconsideration (MR) — either increasing your award or awarding PIP for the first time — you are entitled to arrears going back to the effective date of the original decision. PIP backpay is paid as a tax-free lump sum, usually within a few weeks of the revised decision.
The effective date is typically the date your original claim started (for a new claim refusal) or the date of the review decision (for a review reduction). The arrears cover the difference between what you were paid and what you should have been paid from that date to the date of the revised decision.
How the Calculation Works
New claim refusal overturned: If your original claim was refused and the MR awards you Standard Daily Living at £76.70 per week, your arrears run from the date entitlement began (after the qualifying period) to the date of the MR decision. If that gap is 12 weeks, you receive approximately £920 in backpay.
Award increase: If you held Standard Daily Living and the MR upgrades you to Enhanced at £114.60 per week, the arrears are the difference (£37.90 per week) multiplied by the number of weeks between the original decision and the revised decision.
Review reduction reversed: If a review reduced your award and the MR restores it, arrears cover the shortfall from the date the reduction took effect.
Backpay is calculated automatically by DWP. You do not need to request it separately.
When Backpay Is Paid
DWP aim to process backpay within 28 days of the revised decision, though it can take longer. The lump sum is paid into the same bank account as your regular PIP payments. You will receive a letter confirming the revised decision, the new rates, and the arrears amount.
If backpay is delayed beyond 28 days with no communication, contact the PIP enquiry line (0800 121 4433) to check the status.

Impact on Other Benefits
PIP itself is not means-tested, so receiving backpay does not affect your PIP entitlement. However, a lump sum of backpay can temporarily affect means-tested benefits:
- Universal Credit — PIP is disregarded as income, and arrears of PIP are disregarded as capital for 12 months from receipt. After 12 months, any unspent backpay counts towards the capital threshold (£6,000 to £16,000 reduces UC; above £16,000 disqualifies).
- Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction — Housing Benefit disregards PIP arrears as capital for 52 weeks after receipt. Council Tax Reduction rules depend on the local council's scheme.
- Savings threshold — if PIP backpay pushes your total savings above a means-tested benefit's capital limit, it may affect those benefits after the disregard period expires.
The 12-month disregard gives you time to use the arrears, but it is worth being aware of the threshold if the lump sum is substantial.
Linked Benefits May Also Trigger Backpay
A successful MR does not just affect PIP. If the revised award qualifies you for linked benefits, those may also produce arrears:
- Carer's Allowance — if your carer becomes eligible because you now receive PIP Daily Living, they can backdate their Carer's Allowance claim by up to 3 months.
- Severe Disability Premium and Universal Credit carer element — PIP Daily Living can satisfy the qualifying-benefit condition for a Severe Disability Premium on some legacy benefits, but further rules apply; the premium is not a standard Universal Credit element. A carer who provides at least 35 hours of care a week for someone receiving either rate of PIP Daily Living may qualify for a Universal Credit carer element; it must be reported and is not added automatically.
- Blue Badge — the automatic PIP criteria differ by country. In England, they are at least 8 points for Activity 12 or exactly 10 points for Activity 11 descriptor E (overwhelming psychological distress). In Wales, they are at least 8 points for moving around or 12 points for planning and following journeys. You still need to apply for a badge.
- Motability — to join, you need the enhanced rate mobility part of PIP and at least 12 months left on your allowance when you apply. The lease begins when you receive the vehicle and enter your PIN, not when you apply.

Backpay After a Tribunal Win
If DWP maintains its decision at MR and you appeal to the First-tier Tribunal, backpay works the same way but typically covers a longer period — from the original decision date to the date of the tribunal's determination. Given that tribunal cases can take several months, the lump sum can be substantial.
At tribunal, 67% of PIP appeals cleared at hearing in April–June 2026 were decided in the claimant's favour. A successful tribunal decision is implemented by DWP, and arrears are paid in the same way.
What If Your MR Increases the Award But Not Enough?
If the MR changes your award — say, from 0 to Standard — but you believe you should have received Enhanced, you can still appeal to the First-tier Tribunal. The MR outcome is the decision you appeal against. DWP will continue paying at the MR-revised rate while the tribunal appeal is pending.
