PIP Appeal Waiting Time: How Long Does a Tribunal Take in 2026?

The current wait times

Ministry of Justice statistics for April to June 2026 report a mean case age at disposal of 37 weeks for Social Security and Child Support cases. This is not a PIP-specific estimate of how long a hearing takes.

Individual cases vary considerably. GOV.UK says it usually takes at least 6 months for an appeal to be heard; some cases wait over a year. The wait depends on local tribunal listing capacity, whether the DWP's response bundle arrives promptly, and whether you or the DWP request any directions or adjournments.

At the end of June 2026, around 129,000 cases were open across the Social Security and Child Support tribunal — a 63% increase year-on-year. PIP made up 65% of Social Security and Child Support disposal volumes in April to June 2026, which gives you a sense of the volume the system is processing.

What happens during the wait

The wait is not dead time. Several things happen between filing and your hearing:

Weeks 1–4: HMCTS acknowledges your appeal, assigns a reference number, and notifies the DWP.

Weeks 4–12: The DWP prepares its response bundle — your claim forms, assessment report, medical evidence, and legal submission — and sends it to both you and the tribunal.

After the bundle arrives: You review the DWP's paperwork, gather further evidence, and send your written submission to the tribunal. This is the most productive part of the wait.

Hearing listing: HMCTS lists your case for a hearing and sends you a notice with the date, time, and venue (or video/phone details). You can request an adjournment or a change of hearing format if the date or venue does not work.

How to track your appeal

If you filed online through GOV.UK, you can track your appeal using the "Manage your appeal" service. This shows the current status — whether the DWP has responded, whether a hearing date has been set, and whether you have any outstanding actions.

If you filed on paper, contact HMCTS by phone or letter with your appeal reference number to check on progress.

HMCTS may also send text message updates at key milestones if you opted in when filing.

Can you speed things up?

You cannot control the listing queue, but you can avoid delays caused by your side:

  • Send evidence promptly. If you have medical letters or a written submission to add, send them as soon as they are ready rather than waiting until a hearing date is set.
  • Respond to directions quickly. If the tribunal asks for something — further information, consent to a paper hearing, confirmation of your representative — reply immediately.
  • Do not request unnecessary adjournments. Each postponement pushes your case back in the queue.

If the DWP has not sent its response bundle and a substantial period has passed, you can write to HMCTS asking the tribunal to use its case management powers to chase the DWP.

What about financial hardship during the wait

If the DWP refused your PIP claim entirely, you receive no PIP payments while the appeal is pending. Unlike Scottish Adult Disability Payment, there is no Short-Term Assistance scheme for PIP appellants in England and Wales. If the DWP reduced your award, you receive the reduced amount until the tribunal decides.

If the wait is causing financial difficulty, contact your local Citizens Advice about other support — council tax reductions, food banks, local welfare assistance, or Universal Credit if you are not already claiming.

If the wait resolves in your favour, you receive backdated arrears from the original decision date, so the financial loss during the waiting period is recovered.

The PIP Tribunal Appeals guide includes a timeline tracker to help you plan each stage of the process and use the waiting period productively.
