Carer's Allowance and Pension Credit: The Carer Addition Explained

What the Carer Addition Is

Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit) includes a carer addition — an extra amount added to your applicable amount when you or your partner receive Carer's Allowance or have underlying entitlement to it. It increases the Pension Credit top-up you're entitled to, which in practice means more money in your account each week.

The carer addition exists because many pension-age carers can't receive a Carer's Allowance payment — their State Pension is too high, so the overlapping benefits rule blocks it. Without the carer addition, their caring role would bring no financial recognition at all.

Who Qualifies

You can get the carer addition if:

  • You receive Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit), and
  • You receive Carer's Allowance, or you have underlying entitlement to Carer's Allowance (your claim was approved but payment is blocked by your State Pension or another overlapping benefit)

The underlying entitlement route is the one most pension-age carers use. You claim Carer's Allowance, DWP confirms you meet all the conditions, and the decision letter shows the benefit isn't payable because of your pension. That letter is your evidence for the Pension Credit team.

How It Works in Practice

Pension Credit works by comparing your income against an "applicable amount" — a target figure the Government says you need to live on. The carer addition raises your applicable amount. If your actual income (State Pension, savings income, etc.) is below the higher applicable amount, Pension Credit tops up the difference.

Adding the carer addition means the gap between your income and the target widens, so your weekly Pension Credit payment goes up. The exact increase depends on your full household income, but for many pensioner carers the carer addition is the difference between qualifying for Pension Credit and not qualifying at all.

The SDP Advantage

Here's why underlying entitlement plus the carer addition is often the best financial outcome for the household:

When Carer's Allowance is paid in cash, the cared-for person usually loses their Severe Disability Premium — an extra amount within their own legacy benefit or Pension Credit worth tens of pounds a week. That loss can wipe out the household gain from the £86.45 allowance.

With underlying entitlement, no Carer's Allowance cash changes hands, so the cared-for person keeps their SDP. The carer gets the Pension Credit carer addition instead. The household holds onto both the SDP and the carer addition — a better net outcome than a paid Carer's Allowance would deliver.

How to Claim

  1. Claim Carer's Allowance first — use the DS700(SP) form if you receive a State Pension, or apply online at gov.uk. DWP will process it and confirm your underlying entitlement
  2. Tell the Pension Credit service — phone the Pension Credit claim line or your existing Pension Credit caseworker and tell them about the Carer's Allowance decision. Have the decision letter reference to hand
  3. Pension Credit will be reassessed — the carer addition is added to your applicable amount and your payment is recalculated

If you already receive Pension Credit but haven't claimed Carer's Allowance, do it now. Many pensioner carers miss out simply because they assume a non-payable benefit has no value.

Related Benefits

The carer addition also triggers other knock-on benefits for Pension Credit recipients: the Christmas bonus, cold weather payments (if your area qualifies), and potentially a higher council tax reduction. These are small individually but add up over a year.
