Carer's Allowance National Insurance Credits and Carer's Credit Explained
NI Credits When You Receive Carer's Allowance
If you receive a paid Carer's Allowance award, you automatically get Class 1 National Insurance credits for every week you are paid. You do not need to apply for them separately — DWP adds them to your NI record.
These Class 1 credits count toward both your State Pension and your eligibility for contribution-based benefits like New Style ESA or New Style JSA. That distinction matters because not all NI credits are equal: Universal Credit, for example, only provides Class 3 credits, which count toward the State Pension but not contribution-based benefits.
You need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance to get the full new State Pension (£241.30 per week in 2026/27). Every year spent caring with Carer's Allowance counts as a qualifying year, so years of unpaid care do not leave a gap in your pension record.
Underlying Entitlement Still Protects Your NI Record
If your Carer's Allowance is not payable because you receive a higher overlapping benefit — most commonly the State Pension — you still have "underlying entitlement" to Carer's Allowance. Underlying entitlement by itself does not give you ongoing Class 1 NI credits. DWP can automatically award Carer's Credit for up to 12 weeks before Carer's Allowance starts and up to 12 weeks after it ends.
This means pension-age carers who claim Carer's Allowance but receive no payment (because their State Pension is £86.45 per week or more) do not get ongoing Class 1 credits from that underlying entitlement. The State Pension itself does not add NI credits. Underlying entitlement can still unlock other benefits, such as the Pension Credit carer addition — covered in our Pension Credit carer addition post.
Carer's Credit: NI Protection Without Carer's Allowance
Carer's Credit is a separate scheme for carers aged 16 or over who are below State Pension age and provide at least 20 hours of care per week. The person they care for must receive a qualifying disability benefit, or a health or social care professional must complete a Care Certificate. It can help if you do not qualify for Carer's Allowance because you care for fewer than 35 hours or have earnings above the £204 weekly net limit.
Carer's Credit provides Class 3 NI credits, which protect your State Pension record. It does not provide a cash payment or Class 1 credits, so it does not count toward contribution-based benefits.
To apply, complete Form CC1 (available on GOV.UK). A Care Certificate must be signed by a health or social care professional. Apply before the end of the tax year following the year you cared.

Who Should Apply for Carer's Credit?
You should consider Carer's Credit if any of these apply:
- You care for 20 or more hours a week but under 35, so you do not meet the Carer's Allowance threshold
- You earn above the £204 weekly net limit and cannot claim Carer's Allowance
- You care for someone who receives a qualifying disability benefit but you are disqualified from Carer's Allowance for another reason (for example, studying more than 21 hours a week)
- You share care responsibilities with someone else who has claimed Carer's Allowance for the same person
If you already receive Child Benefit for a child under 12, you are already getting Class 3 NI credits through that route and do not need Carer's Credit on top.
Gaps in Your NI Record
Check your NI record on GOV.UK to see whether you have gaps from years spent caring without either Carer's Allowance or Carer's Credit. If there are gaps, you may be able to pay voluntary Class 3 contributions to fill them, though the deadline for doing so is usually six years.
Our Carer's Allowance Claim Guide covers the NI credit rules alongside the earnings limit, the 35-hour test, and the interaction with other benefits — so you can see the full picture before deciding whether to claim Carer's Allowance or apply for Carer's Credit instead.
