Attendance Allowance and Pension Credit: Extra Benefits an Award Unlocks
More Than Just the Weekly Payment
Attendance Allowance pays £76.70 or £114.60 per week in 2026/27, depending on your rate. But the award itself acts as a key that unlocks additional support across the benefits system. For many households, the linked entitlements are worth as much as — or more than — the Attendance Allowance payment itself.
The Severe Disability Addition (£86.05 Per Week)
If you claim Pension Credit and you receive Attendance Allowance, you may qualify for the Severe Disability Addition. In 2026/27 this adds £86.05 per week to your Pension Credit guarantee — nearly doubling the total weekly benefit gain from an Attendance Allowance award.
The conditions are:
- You receive Attendance Allowance (either rate).
- You live alone, or are treated as living alone (meaning nobody in the household receives Carer's Allowance for looking after you, and no one else in your home is a "non-dependant" for benefit purposes).
- Nobody receives Carer's Allowance specifically for caring for you.
That third point creates a significant trap, covered below.
The Carer's Allowance Trap
An unpaid carer who looks after you for 35 or more hours a week and earns £204 per week or less can claim Carer's Allowance — currently £86.45 per week. On paper, that looks like a straightforward gain for the household.
But if you currently receive the Severe Disability Addition within Pension Credit, the moment your carer is paid Carer's Allowance, you lose the £86.05 addition. The household gain is roughly 40p per week, while the carer becomes subject to an earnings cap and potential tax implications.
The workaround for older carers: if the carer is over State Pension age and receives a State Pension of at least £86.45 per week, Carer's Allowance is not actually paid because of overlapping benefit rules. However, the carer still establishes an "underlying entitlement" to Carer's Allowance. This underlying entitlement lets you keep your £86.05 Severe Disability Addition, while also enabling the carer to claim the Carer Addition (£48.15 per week) within their own Pension Credit. The household gains both payments — a difference of over £130 a week compared to simply claiming Carer's Allowance and losing the addition.
This is not straightforward. Before any carer submits a Carer's Allowance claim, get a full benefit calculation from Citizens Advice, Age UK, or the Pension Service.

Council Tax Reductions
Report your Attendance Allowance award to your local council. It can trigger a Council Tax Reduction — the calculation treats Attendance Allowance income as fully disregarded, and the disability premium uplift in the means test can significantly increase your rebate. Some councils also reduce or remove non-dependant deductions when the claimant receives Attendance Allowance.
The exact impact depends on your council's local scheme, but it is always worth notifying them.
Housing Benefit
If you rent and claim Housing Benefit, your Attendance Allowance is disregarded as income and your applicable amount (the amount the system says you need to live on) increases through the disability premium. This can increase the Housing Benefit you receive or bring you into entitlement if you were previously just over the threshold.
Other Support
An Attendance Allowance award may also support:
- NHS low income scheme — for help with prescription charges, dental costs, travel to hospital.
- Warm Home Discount — some energy suppliers offer additional support to people receiving disability benefits.
- Blue Badge — Attendance Allowance does not automatically qualify you for a Blue Badge (the badge has its own mobility-based criteria), but an award may support your application by evidencing the severity of your condition.
- Local concessions — transport passes, community alarm schemes, and charitable grants often list receipt of Attendance Allowance among their eligibility criteria.
