PIP Assessment for ADHD: What to Expect and How to Prepare

How ADHD Assessments Work

After you submit your PIP2 form (or Part 2 of the ADP application in Scotland), the assessing authority decides whether to call you for a consultation or to make a decision based on the paper evidence alone. In England and Wales, most cases require a consultation — by telephone, video or face-to-face. In Northern Ireland, DfC may decide from the written information or invite you to a consultation. In Scotland, Social Security Scotland gathers supporting information first and arranges a consultation only if it needs more information to decide.

In England and Wales, a PIP assessment usually takes 1 hour. In Northern Ireland, consultations have no fixed time limit and last as long as needed. In Scotland, your invitation letter says how long the consultation should take. In England and Wales, the provider depends on your area (Capita, Ingeus, Serco or Maximus), and DWP conducts some assessments directly. In Northern Ireland, Capita delivers assessments on behalf of DfC. In Scotland, you speak with a health and social care practitioner from Social Security Scotland.

The ADHD-Specific Challenge

The assessment is a short, structured interaction — precisely the type of situation where ADHD masking is strongest. You arrive, sit down, and have a focused conversation. Your adrenaline and social-performance mechanisms kick in. You answer questions clearly, maintain eye contact and appear engaged.

The assessor records what they observe. If you present well, their report may not reflect the executive dysfunction you experience at home. This is not deliberate dishonesty on their part — they are documenting what they see. Your job is to make sure what they see is supplemented by what they read.

Requesting Reasonable Adjustments

The Equality Act 2010 applies in England, Wales and Scotland. In Northern Ireland, the main disability-discrimination law is the Disability Discrimination Act 1995; Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 is a separate public-sector equality duty. You can request reasonable adjustments for your assessment. For ADHD, useful adjustments include:

  • Scheduling the appointment at a time that aligns with your medication — if your stimulant works best mid-morning, request a mid-morning slot
  • Processing breaks during the assessment — ask for pauses if you feel cognitive fatigue building up rather than pushing through and producing increasingly unreliable answers
  • A quiet assessment room if attending in person — sensory overload from a busy waiting room can drain the executive capacity you need for the actual assessment
  • Extra time — if processing questions takes longer than usual

Request adjustments in advance by contacting the assessment provider or Social Security Scotland when you receive your appointment letter. Put the request in writing so there is a record.

Bringing a Companion

You are entitled to bring a companion — a partner, parent, carer, friend or advocate. Their role is not to answer questions on your behalf (the assessor needs to hear from you), but they can:

  • Prompt you when you forget something important
  • Provide additional context that you might minimise or omit due to masking
  • Take notes during the assessment
  • Help you recall what was discussed afterwards

A companion who lives with you and witnesses your daily difficulties is particularly valuable. They can point out things you take for granted — like the fact that they prompt you to take medication every morning, or that they check the kitchen after you cook.

Audio Recording

For PIP in England and Wales, telephone and face-to-face assessments are audio recorded by default unless you opt out; DWP does not audio record video assessments. In Northern Ireland, DfC records consultations and lets you opt out before or during them. Adult Disability Payment consultations in Scotland are recorded unless you opt out.

Having a recording means you can review exactly what was said if you later need to challenge the assessment report. If you believe the report contains errors, the recording is your primary evidence.

During the Assessment

  • Do not perform competence you do not have. If you struggle to recall dates, say so. If you need to think before answering, take the time
  • Describe your worst and typical days, not just today. The assessor sees you once. Your evidence should convey the pattern
  • Use specific examples. "Last week I left the front door open for three hours because I forgot I had come in" is more informative than "I sometimes forget things"
  • Explain what happens without support. If your partner usually prompts you, describe what happens on the days they do not

After the Assessment

The assessor writes a report and sends it to the decision-maker, who makes the final award decision. You can request a copy of the assessment report. If it contains factual errors — things you said that were recorded incorrectly, or observations that do not match what happened — note these down. They become important if you need to request a Mandatory Reconsideration or appeal.

The PIP and Adult Disability Payment for ADHD claim guide includes an assessment preparation worksheet covering what to bring, how to structure your answers around the reliability criteria, and what your companion should be ready to add.
