Carer's Allowance Backdating and Waiting Time: How Long Does It Take?
The Standard Three-Month Backdating Rule
Carer's Allowance can be backdated up to three months before the date DWP receives your claim, as long as you met all the eligibility conditions throughout that period. That means the person you care for must have been receiving their qualifying disability benefit (PIP daily living, Attendance Allowance, or DLA middle/highest care rate) for the entire backdating window, and you must have been providing at least 35 hours of care per week with net earnings at or below £204 (2026/27).
You do not need to give a reason for the delay. The three-month backdate is automatic — DWP should check whether you qualified during those earlier weeks as part of processing your claim.
Extended Backdating After a Late Disability Award
The more useful backdating rule applies when the cared-for person's qualifying benefit was awarded late. If their PIP, Attendance Allowance, or DLA claim took months to decide — or was only awarded after an appeal — you can backdate your Carer's Allowance to the start date of their disability award, not just three months.
The condition is that you submit your Carer's Allowance claim within three months of the date the disability award decision was issued. If the qualifying benefit was awarded on appeal, the three-month window runs from the tribunal decision date.
This matters because PIP and Attendance Allowance claims commonly take several months. A carer who waits for the disability decision before claiming could lose months of entitlement without this extended rule.
How Long Does a Claim Take to Process?
DWP's current DS700 form says it normally gets back to you within 6 weeks, though this may change at busy times. Unlike PIP or Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance does not involve a medical assessment or a face-to-face appointment. DWP verifies your claim administratively by checking:
- The cared-for person's qualifying disability benefit through internal benefit databases
- Your declared earnings against HMRC records
- Whether anyone else is already receiving Carer's Allowance or a Universal Credit carer element for the same person
Claims submitted online through the GOV.UK portal tend to be processed faster than paper DS700 forms. Northern Ireland claims go through the Department for Communities rather than DWP, using the NIDirect portal or a separate paper form.

What Slows Down a Claim
Several things can extend processing time. Missing or incomplete information is the most common — particularly if your payslips do not clearly show gross pay, tax, National Insurance, and pension contributions. Self-employed claimants need to provide trading accounts, which DWP may take longer to assess.
Processing also takes longer when DWP needs to resolve a competing-carers situation (two people claiming for the same disabled person), or when the cared-for person's own disability benefit is under review or appeal.
How to Speed Things Up
Claim online rather than by post. Have the following ready before you start: the cared-for person's National Insurance number and disability benefit reference number, your last payslip before the date of your claim and any payslips since then, details of any pension contributions, and receipts for work-related care costs you want deducted from your earnings.
If you are waiting for the cared-for person's disability benefit to be decided, note the date the award letter arrives. You then have three months from that date to claim Carer's Allowance with extended backdating.
Arrears Payments
If your claim is backdated, DWP pays the arrears as a lump sum alongside your first regular payment. This can be a substantial amount — 13 weeks of Carer's Allowance at the 2026/27 rate of £86.45 per week is £1,123.85. The amount you receive depends on the number of weeks you qualified and were payable.
Arrears may affect means-tested benefits like Universal Credit in the month they are paid. If you are on UC, report the lump sum through your journal so your work coach can advise on how it is treated.
