How Long Does Attendance Allowance Take? Processing Times and What to Expect
The Realistic Timeline
The DWP does not publish a guaranteed processing time for Attendance Allowance claims. In practice, most standard claims take several weeks from the date your completed AA1 form reaches the Attendance Allowance Unit in Wolverhampton. Some are decided faster; others take considerably longer, depending on how much evidence the decision maker needs to gather.
The clock starts when the DWP receives your completed form — not when you phone the helpline, and not when you post the form. If you used the helpline route, your claim date is protected back to the phone call, but the processing countdown begins at receipt.
What Happens During the Wait
Once your form arrives, a decision maker reviews it. For the majority of Attendance Allowance claims, the decision is made entirely on paper — the information you wrote on the form, plus any supporting evidence you sent with it, plus anything the DWP requests from your named healthcare professionals.
Face-to-face medical assessments are uncommon for Attendance Allowance, unlike PIP where they are routine. If the decision maker has enough evidence to decide, your claim is processed without any further contact. If the evidence is contradictory, vague, or missing, the DWP may write to your GP or consultant for more information, or in rare cases commission an assessment by a healthcare professional — usually by telephone.
Each of those extra steps adds time.
What Causes Delays
The most common reasons for a slower decision:
- Missing or incomplete evidence. If you sent the form without a GP letter, care plan, or supporting statements, the decision maker has to request clinical information from your healthcare providers directly. NHS response times to DWP requests vary widely.
- Contradictory information. If the form describes severe night-time needs but a recent GP letter says "managing well at home," the decision maker needs to resolve the discrepancy.
- Assessment ordered. If the decision maker cannot reach a lawful determination from the paperwork, an assessment may be commissioned. This adds the scheduling and reporting time of a contracted healthcare professional.
- Backlogs. The Attendance Allowance Unit handles claims for all of England and Wales (Northern Ireland processes through the Department for Communities in Limavady). Volume spikes after benefit uprating announcements can slow things down.

How to Speed Things Up
The single most effective thing you can do is send strong evidence with the form. Do not wait for the DWP to request it — attach a GP summary printout, occupational therapy assessment, hospital discharge summary, care plan, or prescriptions list when you return the AA1. A complete file at the start avoids the back-and-forth that stretches timelines.
Keeping a seven-day care diary before you fill in the form also helps. It gives the decision maker concrete, dated evidence of your day-to-day care needs rather than general descriptions.
Chasing Your Claim
If you have heard nothing after several weeks, call the Attendance Allowance helpline on 0800 731 0122 and ask for an update. You will need the claimant's National Insurance number. The helpline can tell you whether the claim is being processed, whether more evidence has been requested, and whether an assessment has been arranged.
The Faster Route: Special Rules for End of Life
Claims made under Special Rules for End of Life are fast-tracked. If a medical professional (GP, consultant or specialist nurse) issues a Form SR1 confirming a progressive condition where death is reasonably expected within 12 months, the claim bypasses the normal queue, skips the six-month qualifying period, and is awarded at the Higher Rate (£114.60 per week in 2026/27) as quickly as the DWP can process it.
A third party — a family member, carer or healthcare professional — can submit a Special Rules claim without the claimant's knowledge if needed.
