Child DLA Processing Time: How Long Does It Take and Can It Be Backdated?

Standard Processing Times

In England and Wales, standard child DLA claims typically take 12 to 16 weeks from the date the DWP receives the completed form. In Northern Ireland, the Disability and Carers Service normally takes 30 working days from the day it receives the claim form.

These are targets, not guarantees. Complex cases — those requiring the DWP to contact health professionals, request additional evidence from schools, or review conflicting medical reports — can take longer.

Claims under Special Rules for End of Life are fast-tracked and usually decided within 5 to 10 working days.

What Happens After You Submit

The DWP sends a letter confirming receipt of the application within 3 weeks. You can also request a text confirmation by providing a mobile number on the form.

Most child DLA claims are decided entirely on paper — the claim form plus any medical, educational, and care diary evidence you attached. Unlike adult PIP, face-to-face assessments are rare. The decision-maker may contact your child's GP, consultant, or school SENCO directly to request factual reports, which can add time to the process.

If additional information is needed, the DWP writes to you. Responding quickly helps avoid further delays.

How the Claim Date Works

The date your DLA entitlement starts (and payments are calculated from) depends on how you initiate the claim:

Phone call: If you call the DLA helpline on 0800 121 4600, the date of that phone call becomes the statutory Date of Claim — provided you return the completed form pack within 6 calendar weeks. This is the recommended route because it locks in the earliest possible start date.

Downloaded form: If you download the DLA1 Child (ALT) PDF from GOV.UK, fill it in, and post it, the Date of Claim is the date the DWP receives the paper form. Downloading the PDF does not create a claim date.

Northern Ireland: Contact the Disability and Carers Service or a local Jobs and Benefits office. The date of initial contact sets the claim date if the form is returned within 6 weeks.

Can Child DLA Be Backdated?

DLA cannot be backdated before the date of first contact. If your child has had care needs for years but you only call the helpline today, the earliest the award can start is today's date (minus the 3-month retrospective qualifying period built into the eligibility test, which looks at whether needs existed before the claim — but doesn't create an earlier payment date).

This is why calling the helpline before you start gathering evidence is worth doing. The call date locks in your claim date, and you then have 6 weeks to complete the form.

If the DWP awards your claim, payments are backdated to the claim date — not to the decision date. So the 12-16 week processing wait doesn't cost you money, as long as the claim date was established early.

What If It's Taking Too Long

If your claim has been with the DWP for more than 16 weeks with no decision or update:

  • Call the DLA helpline and ask for a progress update
  • Note the date, time, and name of the person you speak to
  • If you still get no response, your MP can make enquiries through the DWP parliamentary unit
  • Citizens Advice can also help chase a delayed claim

While you're waiting, keep your care diary updated. If your child's needs change during the wait, note the changes — they'll be relevant whether the original claim succeeds or you need to challenge the decision.

Planning Ahead

The biggest timing mistake parents make is waiting until they've gathered every piece of evidence before making first contact. Call the helpline first. Then spend the 6-week window completing the form, keeping a care diary, and collecting supporting documents.

Our Child DLA Claim Guide includes a claim timeline tracker that maps out the key dates and deadlines from first contact through to the decision.
