Adult Disability Payment for Autism and ADHD in Scotland
Autism and ADHD create daily barriers that are real but often invisible — and the ADP application form is not designed to draw them out. If you describe your difficulties in clinical terms ("I have autism spectrum disorder") rather than functional terms ("I cannot follow a new bus route without someone guiding me because I become severely distressed"), the scoring system will miss the impact entirely.
ADP is scored on how a condition affects what you can do, not on what the condition is called. Here is how autistic people and people with ADHD typically score across the 12 activities.
Daily Living Activities Most Affected
Preparing food (Activity 1). Executive function difficulties can make meal planning, sequencing cooking steps, and monitoring food safety genuinely impossible without prompting. If you burn food regularly or cannot judge whether something is cooked through, describe the frequency and what happens when no one is there.
Taking nutrition (Activity 2). If you need someone to prompt you to eat, describe how often this happens and what happens when no one is there.
Managing therapy or monitoring a health condition (Activity 3). If you take medication for ADHD or a co-occurring condition and cannot remember doses without a prompt, alarm, or another person physically handing you tablets, this activity applies. It also covers monitoring mental health — recognising when you are becoming overwhelmed before it escalates.
Engaging with other people face to face (Activity 9). Social interaction difficulties sit at the core of many autistic people's experience. If you experience severe anxiety, shutdowns, or meltdowns during face-to-face interactions, or if you need someone with you to manage communication, explain how often this happens and what the consequences are.
Making decisions about money (Activity 10). Impulsive spending with ADHD, difficulty with complex budgeting, or inability to manage household finances without help all fall here. Distinguish between complex budgeting (calculating bills, comparing costs) and simple budgeting (buying items in a shop and getting change).
Mobility Activities
Planning and following journeys (Activity 11). This is often where autistic applicants score highest. If unfamiliar routes cause overwhelming distress, if sensory overload on public transport prevents independent travel, or if you cannot plan a journey to a new place without another person, describe the specific barriers. The descriptors cover both cognitive route-planning and the psychological impact of travel.
The Reliability Test and Masking
Regulation 7 asks whether you can do an activity safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly, and within a reasonable time. For autistic people, masking is the critical factor the form rarely captures. You might be able to hold a conversation in a shop for five minutes — but if doing so leaves you in shutdown for three hours, you are not completing that activity to an acceptable standard repeatedly throughout the day.
Describe what happens after you force yourself through an activity. The cost of masking — the exhaustion, the meltdowns, the recovery time — is part of how reliably you can do the task.

Evidence That Helps
Formal diagnosis reports are useful but not sufficient on their own. What strengthens an ADP application for autism or ADHD is evidence of daily functional impact:
- A detailed statement from someone who lives with you or sees you regularly, describing what you need help with and how often
- Occupational therapy assessments or social work reports
- Letters from mental health professionals that describe functional limitations, not just diagnosis
- Your own detailed account in Part 2, activity by activity, covering typical days and worst days
Social Security Scotland treats evidence from carers and family members equally with professional medical evidence, so a well-written carer statement carries real weight.
Our ADP claim guide includes self-assessment worksheets for every activity, structured around the reliability criteria, so you can organise your experience before writing your Part 2 answers.
